My wife and I go to Sassos once a month - the food is excellent, the service is friendly and it is good value for money

It was my second visit to Sasso Restaurant not by choice as the first time was awful and I gave it the benefit of the doubt this time but was disappointed yet again. This is a review of my personal experience. You enter the restaurant at the back of the building next to an open kitchen door and opposite a Chinese takeaway. You are sat in what is best described as a dated Doctors waiting room with complimentary pickles/olives at your table. You are immediately asked what you want to drink without being offered and wine list. It feels quite sterile and you feel you have to whisper as no music is playing. The waiters/manager crack jokes about ''not making profit on us'' annoyingly on numerous occasions throughout the night. The specials are not written on a board or shown in the menu so you do not know what price you are paying if you order them. We were told the pork special we ordered was tenderloin but in fact it was 2x boned pork chops for a whopping £21 each not including veg/potatoes as that was extra! But a similar pork dish on the menu would be rough equivalent to £10.95. We also ordered the special starter of Asparagus (£8 each) again the equivalent in the menu would be £4.The waiter informed us the 1/2 bottles of house red are served in reused old 1/2 red bottle - nice at £7 a pop! The mineral water is charged at £3, and an Italian liqueur limoncello (recommended by the waiter) was £5 a shot. The waiter informs us oddly that it's not special as it can be bought cheap in Tesco for £8. Desserts are pleasant and reasonable at £4-5 each visible on a dessert trolley. The other customers appear to be local and regular. The restaurant is sparse, dated and cold in atmosphere and there are approximately 10/12 tables in total. I can recommend you don't feel rushed but for obvious reasons to make more $$$ out of you! Here is our Bill -2 x Special Asparagus/Mozzarella Starters-£16, 2x Mains £39 (1 x chicken breast & 1 x Special Pork chop!) Desserts £9, Bar £42 (4 x ½ bottles of wine, 2x liqueur & 1x bottle of water) TOTAL £106 meal for 2.I feel quite ripped off as I would have been more then happy to pay these prices if the food and service were up to par.I think some of the prices were made up as they went along as we were scanned to see if we were drunk enough not notice or if they could get away with it. I would not recommend this place unless you are happy with mediocre food served in a cold atmosphere and penny pinching staff who make it obvious your here to pay their wages. This place is an experience but not the kind you want to remember.
