We used Olivers to feed our weddng guests last week and they certainly didn't disappoint! The food was ready, hot and fresh when our man turned up to collect it, no messing around, they delivered on time, quality, and taste! All our guests loved it! It could easily have been a disaster if they hadn't delivered in every way - but thankfully they did - it was great - Thanks!
Olivers has been established for over 35 years (I know because i've lived nearby all my life) and has never disappointed me nor the people of Basingstoke, judging by the numerous awards that have been bestowed upon it. The previous reviewer must be on another planet when recommending the Trawlerman - a bit like comparing Alexandra Burke to Eoghan Quigg from the recent X-Factor series - not even on the same level.I'd admit that the decor had looked a bit jaded recently, but have you visited recently? The restaurant has been given a complete revamp and now looks fantastic.
I have just moved to the area and with this being our local i though lets try it, its always talked about, we queed outside the door for absolutly ages, the price is rather expensive, the staff were great they cope well when so busy. When i got back home with the chips i though they were rather thin, and didn't really enjoy them i have been back a few times to give them the benifit of doubt but not been impressed - Prefer the trawlerman in Chineham Chunky chips are the way to go.

this place is a bit far to go for fish and chips in my opinion, and i can think of many other fish and chip shops that are alot better and slightly cheaper but their food is ok, fresh and hot, although it can take a while to get your food so dont go if your starving. we live too far from here really and chips are always cold by the time we get home if we choose to takeaway our food. It did win a couple of awards for its fish and chips a while ago and maybe then the food was a bit better than it is now. i would give this fish and chip shop 7 out of 10 for its food and 8 out of 10 for its service but 5 out of 10 for its position
There is nothing I like more than finding my way to Olivers for excellent food. Can be a little bit more expensive than other places, but worth it.
It's noteworthy that "roadrunner" had no complaint about the quality of the food at Olivers. About the service, my wife and I can sometimes sympathise with him/her - we visit this restaurant regularly and we always manage to hit peak times (but maybe it's always this busy.) At such peak times, as with other very busy restaurants that we visit, we haven't always received the level of care and attention that we think we deserve. But to their credit, we have never come across a rude or discouteous member of the waiting staff. However, it's the consistent quality of the fish and chips that keeps us coming back for more and, on balance, for the very reasonable prices, we can't fault it.So Olivers, keep doing what you're doing - you'll never be able to please all of the people all of the time.
Oh Dear!! what has happened to this once great regular stop off for me and my family. I've been going here for over 15 years, stopping en-route to Dorset for the best fish and chips between home and Swanage.I also meet up with relatives here as they make there way from Belgium to the west country - it used to be that good that i considered it worth the 70 mile drive to meet up with my niece and her family and know that I would get a good meal. However the last few times I've noticed that the staff in the restaurant are not so friendly - to the point of being quite sullen. But last Friday was the last straw - they were busy, but not over run, the waitress quickly and courtiously cleared a table for my wife and I, we sat down and I said that we were ready to order - and then we sat there for 20 minutes, toatally ignored. The staff didn't seem to be able to prioritise, in other words, take the order. Instead they chatted to the other customers, and cleared the empty tables ready for the next customer. We then left, I will not be ignored, I will go elsewhere. So sorry, Olivers, Iv'e transferred my custom to a fish and chip shop in Farnham, a bit off my normal route, but I feel that my custom and very generous tip will be more appreciated
Olivers cooks some of the best fish and chips I have ever tasted. Choice of take-away or eat in the restaurant. The staff are friendly and you get bargain prices if you eat early in the restaurant. You also get free mackeral pate whilst you decide what to order. The take away can get busy at times, but it's well worth the wait!
